About Us

LowellArts! began with the enthusiasm of community volunteers and funds raised through a visit to Lowell by Artrain USA in November 1976. Originally called Lowell Area Arts Council, the organization was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1977 with initial projects that included community beautification, and showcasing local and regional artists in its Hudson Street Gallery space. The first community theatre production was in 1978 and has grown to include three or four productions a year.  In September 1977, the Arts Council became the sponsor of the Fallasburg Fall Festival for the Arts, a growing two-day outdoor art and music celebration ever since.

The City of Lowell is a rural community located 20 miles east of downtown Grand Rapids and 15 miles west of Ionia.  LowellArts! has served the greater Lowell community the last 34 years as an “instigator” for helping to make the arts happen.  We honor the creativity of our community artists by supporting them as business partners to publicly showcase, present, and produce their art.  Through this effort the organization serves the greater Lowell arts community through leadership in arts business management and technical assistance that includes oversight of program planning and implementation, volunteerism, facility management, marketing, sponsorships and fundraising, ticket sales, and financial management.  LowellArts! emphasizes the importance of making the arts offered in Lowell accessible to all who wish to participate.  Therefore, the organization supports community arts programs and services that are relevant to the interests and needs of the artists and participants.

LowellArts! staff includes Lorain Smalligan, Executive Director, and Kacey Cornwell, Project Director.  The organization is governed by a board of directors that meets monthly.  It also includes volunteers on program, festival and fundraising committees to support the planning and implementation of these events.
