Nature-Writing 2008
“A Contest for Lovers of Nature”

This is a contest for writers who love nature and the out-of-doors. Write on any theme having to do with nature, the seasons, the outdoors – but keep it to 750 words or fewer! Essays, creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry are all accepted. The readings will be an “open mike” format, and authors not wishing to read can have their work read for them. Bring a friend!

Age-Groups for Judging:
Elementary (through Grade 5)
Youth under 18 (grades 6-12)
Adult (18 and older)

Target audience:
Nature lovers, one and all! Gather for an evening of readings about nature and the seasons at our own Wittenbach/Wege Agri-Science Environmental Center and Natural Area. Content of stories to be “family-friendly.

Schedule:
Tues., Apr. 29, 5 p.m.: Deadline for submissions to be delivered to the Arts Council
Mon., May 5: Winners notified (and encouraged to come read on May 7!)
Wed., May 7, 6:30 p.m.: Readers to gather and prep for the event
7:00-8:30 p.m.: Nature essays and stories – including the winners of the contest for each age group!

How to Submit Entries:
Entry information needs to include the following info:

  • Entries must be 750 words or fewer. Typed double space in 12-point Times New Roman or Arial with 1.5" margins, single-side.
  • Subject matter must be “family-friendly.”
  • Entry must be submitted with cover sheet containing:
      • author’s name
      • contact information (address, phone #s, e-mail address)
      • short personal bio
      • age

    • Put entry's TITLE and page numbers on each page of the story. Author name SHOULD NOT appear anywhere on the manuscript itself, only on the cover page.
    • Award Certificates:  First through third place for both adult writers and writers under 18.
    • Winners encouraged to read their stories on May 7.
